PCFS Support the Peasant and People Struggle of Baturaden, Central Java Against PLTP Project
Indonesia Gas Power Plant Project Should Be Junked!
We are the People Coalition for Food Sovereignty (PCFS) calling on all land and food activists to support the struggle of the farmers, indigenous peoples and all peoples of Slamet Mountain, Central Java and Indonesia against the PLTP project!
The People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) unites with the farmers, indigenous peoples and people of Slamet Mountain, Central Java and all of Indonesia in opposing the Baturaden Geothermal Power Plant or PLTP project. We support their call, being amplified by the Alliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (AGRA) and Front Perjuangan Rakyat (FPR), leading progressive organizations of Indonesia, against the said project.
We demand and immediate halt to the exploration drilling being undertaken at present, which will pave the way for the continuation and eventual completion of the project.
The PLTP project means land grabbing on a massive scale and is already causing the displacement of farmers, indigenous peoples and people in the area; the damage to their lives and livelihood; the occurrences and worsening of disasters; and the destruction of the environment. It could only mean further denial of land and food sovereignty from the people in Slamet Mountain, Central Java.
Residents are finding it hard to get water to drink, to wash clothes with, and to irrigate their farms with. The project is causing deforestation, damage to land, environment and pollution of rivers. This fact will bring the threat of worse disaster, as well as the fact that has caused flooding and landslides which has claimed lives of many residents in Java and the surrounding areas recently. These effects are bound to worsen if the project pushes through.
We condemn the government of Indonesian president Joko Widodo for approving this project. We condemn the big capitalist firm PT Sejahtera Alam Energi (SAE), which is dominated by German big capitalists, for undertaking this project. We are alarmed that Herman Afif Kusomo, who was involved in corruption cases under the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono regime and is currently president commissioner of PT SAE, is most likely exercising his influence in government for the project to push through.
The PLTP project’s promise of providing additional electricity supply to Java, Bali and Madura and of providing the electricity supply needs of the New Yogyakarta Airport should be fulfilled without grabbing land from farmers, indigenous peoples and other peoples, without attacking their land and livelihoods, and without destroying the environment.
We likewise condemn the Indonesian government and police force for inflicting repression on the farmers, indigenous peoples and other peoples of Central Java who resist the project. We condemn the illegal arrests and beatings of protestors. Instead of violating the rights of its people, the Indonesian government should heed their legitimate demands.
We are calling on all land and food activists to support the struggle of the farmers, indigenous peoples and all peoples of Slamet Mountain, Central Java and Indonesia against the PLTP project. Development should be pursued by advancing land reform, food sovereignty, and environmental protection, not by attacking these demands of the people.
